About the ESOL Program
The
ESOL Program services Limited English Proficient (LEP) students in the
seven schools in Pelham and Windham.LEP studentscan
be:
- recent
immigrants or refugees who don’t speak or understand any English at all
- less
recent immigrants or refugees who know a little of the language
- born in the U.S. of
immigrant parents who speak only the language of their heritage at home
- children of families
who have been in this country for generations but still maintain their
heritage language at home
- adopted from another
country by a U.S. family.
The ESOL program strives to help these student
improve their English language skills and acclimate to the American
culture so that they will experience success inside and outside the
classroom. Instructors are certified educators, and provide instruction
in the regular classroom ("push-in" services) as well as targeted
support outside the classroom.
