Fifth Grade "F.Y.I."


•    How many fifth grade classes are in Windham Center School?

o    There are nine fifth grade classes.

•    How many students are in each fifth grade class?

o    Class size varies from around 23-25.

•    Do you have homework in fifth grade?

o    There are three kinds of homework. One is completing daily work; another is a daily assignment that should not take more than 50 minutes. Parents may sign students off if work is not completed after 50 minutes. The third kind of homework is a long term project with a special theme.

•    Do you have recess?

o    There is recess after lunch. Because the weather varies, we ask that all students dress appropriately. We try to go out a least a few minutes every day.

•    Do you have a lunch room?

o    We have a lunch room called the cafetorium. This room is also used for presentations

•    What specials do you have?

o    Each class participates in art, music, and library skills once a week. Physical education meets twice per week. The class periods run 45 minutes.

•    Do you have a playground?

o    Yes, there is a wood chip section with swings, jungle gym, trolley, and gymnastic equipment. We have a baseball field and a soccer/football field.

•    Do you switch classes?

o    We have four teams of two teachers and one self-contained peanut-free classroom. Sometimes teams share presentations, art projects, and special activities. Some teams switch for subject areas such as Social Studies and

Science. In addition, there are a variety of events which include the entire fifth grade.
•    Do you have special projects?

o    Some of the special fifth grade projects include

•    Writing a research project
•    Project on one of the 50 states

•    Do you have any field trips?

o    Yes, the fifth grade varies their field trips year to year usually with a Science or Social Studies focus.

•    Do fifth graders have a chance to take partial special school-wide activities?

o    Yes, we have (DI) which is called Destination Imagination. This is an enrichment program. We also have Student Council, band, chorus, and intramural floor hockey. We have one fund-raiser to benefit the school which is used to help fund field trips and bring special presentations and activities to the school.
