Enrichment at Golden Brook School
The Enrichment Program at Golden Brook School
has been designed to foster the development of creative problem solving and
critical thinking skills with an emphasis on Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple
Intelligences - teaching children the way they learn! This theory recognizes
the multifaceted profile of the human mind. The goal of the Enrichment Program
is to make the school curriculum more effective for all students. It is our
belief that all children need the tools necessary to survive and function
in today's ever changing world.
Lessons to develop these skills include: brainstorming,
decision making, deductive reasoning, making predictions, logic problems,
and spatial perception. These concepts are taught through many hands-on activities
using pattern blocks, dominoes, and linker cubes as well as written assignments
and projects. Whole class instruction is scheduled once a week for a forty
minute lesson.
Golden Brook School continues to develop and
implement new approaches to learning including an Enrichment Pull-Out Program.
Students targeted for this program are pulled out of class for a thirty minute
class once a week. For these classes children who exhibit a strength in reading
(verbal ~ linguistic), a talent in Art/Creativity (visual ~ spatial), or a
talent/interest in Music (musical ~ rhythmic) go to a designated classroom
for these advanced level activities.
Students selected for this program have been
selected on the basis of their obvious strengths and abilities The basis of
selection includes many criteria, including input from current and past teachers,
academic records, observation in the classroom, as well as student outcomes
of specifically assigned tasks and assignments.
It is our belief that each child is born with
unique talents and abilities and that the development of these intelligences
is critical to the acquisition of knowledge and experience. So, in recognizing
that each child has a unique intelligence profile, we will strive to meet
the individual needs of ALL students!
Destination ImagiNation
Destination ImagiNation is an international,
creative, problem-solving competition for students in elementary school through
college. Its purpose is to foster the development of creative thinking and
problem-solving skills among young students.
Under the guidance of a Team Manager, teams
of five to seven students pool their talents to find innovative solutions
to Team Challenges provided by Destination ImagiNation, Inc. These Challenges
man involve anything from building mechanical devices or structures to interpreting
classical literature. Another aspect of the competition is the "Instant
Challenge" segment in which students must respond to a brainstorming
problem or an impromptu task.
Windham
has been involved in creative problem-solving programs since 1985.
Students in grades 2-8 who wish to participate in Destination
ImagiNation may register with their respective schools and then
complete a tryout problem. Parents and other interested adults are
recruited and trained to be Team Managers.
Regional Competitions are usually held in March
followed by a State Competition in April. Teams advancing to Global Finals
compete at the end of May at a designated University in the United State.
Destination ImagiNation dedicates itself to
enriching the global community and the lives of all those touched by the program,
by providing opportunities to explore and discover creative potential through
teamwork, cooperation, and mutual respect.
