Second Grade Studies Native Americans
Everyday Mathematics is the
program we use in both first and second grade at Golden Brook
School. Mathematics is more meaningful when it is
rooted in real-life contexts and situations, and when second grade students are
given the opportunity to become actively involved in learning.
In literacy, second grade students learn text and comprehension strategies such as looking through the whole word, making connections and inferring to better understand and enjoy their reading. They discover the nuances of fiction and non-fiction text through several book related projects.
Among the Social Studies
units covered in Grade two are Native Americans, holidays around the world,
biographies of famous Americans, and mapping skills. Students visit museums and
enjoy guest speakers, as well as work together on research projects to showcase
their understanding.
Students in second grade
practice thinking like a scientist when studying rocks, matter, plants and
conservation. They apply skills such as
observing, predicting, collecting data, analyzing results, and hypothesizing.
Throughout the school year, Second Grade students enjoy a variety of presentations sponsored by the PTA. Past presentations have included children's authors, Lawrence Pringle and Sarah Thomson and a science expert, Mr. Magnet, who mesmerized students with a spectacular program to enhance their science curriculum.
Second grade students
receive small group instruction in the computer lab once a week to incorporate
technology and facilitate innovative learning.
They also use Dana AlphaSmart devices and laptops in their classrooms
for various learning projects throughout the school year.
Golden Brook has been
implementing the Responsive Classroom approach. This approach focuses on fostering social,
emotional, and academic growth in a safe community. There are several components to this
approach, including morning meeting, stop and think spot (to reflect), and
several other activities in and outside of the classroom which support an
optimal second grade learning environment.
The second grade teachers at
Golden Brook strive to create an atmosphere that fosters learning. We aim to create a safe and supportive
environment in which students feel comfortable and respected. We incorporate various methods to ensure that
each student has the opportunity to be successful. It is our goal to instill in our students a
passion for lifelong learning.
