Golden Brook Library

The Windham School Media
Center program provides
carefully selected materials in all formats to students and staff in curricular
and interest areas. The program’s goal is to collaborate with teachers in developing
responsible, independent learners who find, evaluate and use information, and
to encourage reading competency and enjoyment.
Two professional District Media Generalists and three full-time Library
Assistants serve the district's 1600 students and their teachers. In addition,
volunteers provide an invaluable service at all three schools. Volunteer tasks
include shelving books, helping students use the online catalog and find
materials on the shelves, processing books, shelf reading, coordinating the PTA
Book Fair, and completing various special projects. The PTA also has offered
incredible monetary and material support through the operation of the spring
and fall book fairs at each school and the summer golf fundraiser.
The Destiny automated circulation system efficiently manages library
resources and provides excellent service to students. The automated catalog
from each school is available online. Through the Media Center
web page students and staff can access multiple online databases. Grolier
Online includes the Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia, America the Beautiful, and Lands
and People. Through the State Library’s NHewLink we also receive access to
EBSCO databases, which include NoveList K-8, elementary article search
databases like Searchasaurus, and middle school and adult databases. NetTrekker
is a “smart” and safe search engine; Atomic Learning provides web-based
software training. Students also have access to Maps101 (maps), NoodleTools (a bibliography
creator), NewsBank (newspapers), and Biography
Resource Center
(biographies).
Students at each level are active in a variety of special library media
center programs and activities. At Golden Brook and Center Schools
these include visiting authors and activities for Read Across America Week,
Poetry Month, and National Children's Book Week. Students also participate in book
projects, writing contests, spring and fall book fairs, summer reading
incentive programs, and voting for the Ladybug Book Award. Additionally, Center School
students participate in Battle
of the Books, the 25+ Book Club, and voting for the Great Stone Face book
award.
