TRANSITION PHILOSOPHY
If a child turns six before September 30th, he
or she is required by law to enter school. Ready or Not!
The Transition Classroom is specifically designed to meet
the needs of these children who are chronologically 6, but developmentally 5
and 5 1/2.
The Transition student is exposed to first grade standards
at a pace that is developmentally appropriate. Transition students grow and
learn at a rate that is comfortable for them.
In literacy, the transition student is exposed to
literature through read alouds and small group instruction. Students are taught
different reading strategies to help them become better readers. In phonics,
students are instructed using a variety of methods, including the LiPs program,
which teaches students sounds using a multi-sensory approach. We also use the
Working With Word process to teach students how words work through letter and
sound manipulation.
In mathematics students learn skills that will help them
to gain number sense through the Everyday Math Program. All First grade skills
are taught in Transition, but at a more comfortable pace.
Transition students explore science through observing,
predicting, collecting data, analyzing results, and hypothesizing. They study
trees, conservation, insects, and pond life. Exposure to these topics is the
most important part of the science curriculum.
Social Studies addresses
concepts of civics and government, economics, geography, and history. Scholastic
Weekly readers play a large part in the social studies curriculum. Students
develop an awareness of the symbolic and patriotic and cultural holidays of our
nation. |
