Windham High School Ed Specs

What building wide communication and technology requirements are proposed?

Windham High School will have a multi-use communication network. This communication network will enable students, educators and members of the community to take advantage of the many resources offered by a technologically advance learning environment.

The Windham High School communication system will meet the administrative and instructional needs of the school, provide for a quality installation that is aesthetically consistent with the classroom and office environment, is adaptable to future needs, and is well documented to provide for convenient, effective administration and maintenance of the networking system. The wire distribution system will include a communications equipment room, communication closets and communications outlets which will support voice, video and data sources. A combination of copper wiring, coaxial cabling and fiber optics will be used. All communications equipment rooms and closets will have ample space for equipment with an environmentally controlled atmosphere and adequate power and surge protection. All these areas will have proper security. Wireless technology access points will be installed throughout the building so that the building communications network will be accessible via wireless devices used by students and staff. Accommodations will be made for proper electrical and data wiring, mounting, location and security of wireless access points.

The local area network (LAN) will provide for a minimum of 100mb bandwidth capacity to all computer workstations and networked peripherals. The wide area network will provide gigabyte capacity between communication closets and other school buildings and the district office.

Windham High school will have an integrated telephone and public address system (intercom). Each classroom will have a telephone handset linked to the intercom system with the ability to call all other areas in the building including administrative offices, library media center and other classrooms. Staff members will be able to retrieve messages from the school's automated voice messaging system directly from their classroom.

Each classroom and instructional area will have access to computer clusters and/or labs within or adjacent to the standard classroom setting. All clusters and labs will be fully networked and include instructional software tied to curriculum needs, Internet and e-mail access, CD-RW/DVD-R capabilities and access to printing resources, scanners and presentation devices such TVs and projection systems. Additional peripherals will be available dependent on curriculum needs (i.e., science probes, digital cameras, robotics, etc.) Each classroom will have a teacher workstation. The teacher workstation will have the capability to create and/or access local and global instructional resources for their classroom. Each teacher workstation will have the capability to display to a large presentation device that is permanently mounted on the wall or ceiling. There will be adequate power and data outlets in all instructional areas to address current and future technological needs and allow flexibility for the integration of mobile and wireless devices as well as distance learning technologies. There will be adequate and proper storage space for technology devices, software, manuals and mobile computer labs.

Windham High will have the capability to support an integrated video/audio system. All classrooms and instructional areas will be capable of receiving cable TV. Proper coax cabling will be installed and distributed throughout the building. Additional wiring will be installed in selected areas of the building to provide for interactive television and broadcast distribution capabilities.

Essential to the effective utilization of all technological resources by students and staff at Windham High is the availability of adequate technology staff to support the technology infrastructure. Both instructional and technical personnel will be on staff to provide support and assistance on an on-call basis.
