From the Dean of Mathematics, Science, and Technology!
Welcome to Windham High School! I am thrilled to join a fantastic team of innovative educators designing a 21st century academic institution from the ground up. Our team has already begun thorough research of exemplary high school curricula and programs, state standards and best practices, and college admission requirements and campus trends. We have also begun drafting our program of studies and school policies, and I believe the Windham community will be impressed with the depth and breadth of courses we will unfold for students through our opening years.
In my role as Dean of Mathematics, Science, and Technology, I am responsible for developing a curriculum that offers an interdisciplinary approach to these disciplines and prepares students to become active and ethical participants in our evolving global society. In my vision, science classes will incorporate technology in laboratory experiments and mathematical methods in the analysis of data; mathematics classes will draw example material from courses in science, technology, the arts, and humanities; and technology classes will support and advance understanding in other disciplines by emphasizing connections between and modern applications of science and mathematics. I look forward to establishing a collaborative teaching environment wherein teachers meet regularly to seek and emphasize relevant connections between course materials, support one another, and share ideas in a community of students and teachers working together as lifelong learners engaged the constant stream of new material in these disciplines.
I am also committed to educating for a brighter future and have begun dialogue with the Windham Initiative for Renewable Energy and local schools and colleges about alternative energy and environmental research in the high school science classroom. I am developing a program that emphasizes modern global issues and the complex ethics and diverse perspectives of modern science and technology, and I look forward to supporting the Windham community in exploring the possible installation of solar panels and wind turbines at the high school.
I am honored to participate in the establishment of Windham High School and to collectively envision and shape the future with Windham High students. I look forward working with students and all interested members of the Windham community as we create and expand the mathematics, science, and technology fields of the 21st century.
Best wishes for a wonderful fall, Mary K. Fries Dean of Mathematics, Science, and Technology
