Welcome from the Windham High School Athletic Department!
This is a unique and exciting endeavor we are embarking on as we develop both the academic and co-curricular programs for our new high school. As the Athletic Administrator for Windham High School, I am responsible for the development and implementation of the athletic programs and athletic facilities. I would like to give my gratitude to the work that that Athletic Committee has done prior to the arrival of the planning team. Their previous work has assisted us in the development of our core concepts and this preliminary work will be our initial driver as we build a first-rate athletic program at Windham High School.
I have spent most of my life associated with athletics, so it was to no one’s surprise when I chose Athletic Administration as my career choice. I now enter my tenth year of being an Athletic Director and over that time have seen the value that extra-curricular activities play in the lives of the student-athletes. I see the athletic department as an extension of the classroom and a place for continued development by the Windham High School students. Having coached various sports for many years, I can personally attest to the shared values and lessons attained through participation in athletics. It is through this bond between academics and athletics that the student-athlete can feel ownership of, and a sense of belonging to, our school. I would strongly recommend all Windham High School students become active participants in our programs. This participation may be on the field of play, as a member of the band, or a supportive fan in the stands; regardless of which role you may play, your participation is welcomed, encouraged, and an important component of Windham High School.
Over the next several weeks we will be making the final determinations for our initial athletic offerings for the 2009-2010 school year. To assist in this important task, I have been consulting with many members of the Windham community, representatives of local youth programs, and the staff at Salem High School. We have met with both the Salem High School freshmen from Windham, as well as the 8th graders at the middle school regarding athletics. These groups have completed an extra-curricular questionnaire for us and this information will also serve to guide formation of the athletic program development. We will then take the necessary steps to submit our plans to the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association for the Association’s approval of Windham High School’s admission into the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association.
In addition to athletics, I am also developing our physical education and health/wellness curricula. As with the other academic areas, we are instituting a holistic, inter-disciplinary approach that will focus on skills learned in the Human Performance and Wellness courses that the students will carry with them throughout their lives.
There is a passion within the Windham community for academics and athletics. It is with that shared passion that I look forward to the coming seasons with our student-athletes finding success both on the fields and in the classrooms.
