WHS 2009
Transition
Currently, the School Board plans to open Windham High School with all four classes in September, 2009. Some parents have asked the School Board to reconsider their plan and open Windham High with Freshmen and Sophomores, thus allowing Windham students in the Class of 2010 and 2011 to complete their education at Salem High. The School Board will continue to discuss this issue after the New Year.
Students who currently attend Salem High and would like to stay there when Windham High opens need to send a letter to the Salem School District by May 1st, stating their intent. The Salem School District is no longer requiring a $100 deposit with the letter. Previously mailed deposits are being returned.
Athletics
The School Board addressed the Board of Selectmen on Monday, December 10 with their proposal to use 16 acres of Gage property, which abuts the high school property, for athletic facilities. The Board of Selectmen voted 4-1 to hold a public hearing on the matter and will consider posting a warrant article on the town’s March 11 ballot asking for voter support of the transfer.
The School Board continues to assess the athletic needs of the new high school and its students. For information gathered by the School Board’s Athletic Committee go to www.windhamsd.org and click on the high school link. The School Board is in the process of drafting warrant articles that will support those needs.
Principal
The School District is conducting its search for the Principal of Windham High. The first round of interviews has been completed. The Superintendent’s office is hoping to make an announcement by mid January.
The preceding has been an informational report from the School Board’s High School Communication Committee keeping residents informed on the status of the Windham High School project.
