WINDHAM HIGH SCHOOL PROPOSES CHANGE

TO START TIME

Windham High School is proposing a change to its start time for the 2010—2011 academic year by delaying the opening of school by 24 minutes.  Although these changes will have only minimal impact on student schedules and programs, we wanted to provide our parents and public some frequently asked questions (FAQs).   If you have questions we have not yet answered, please contact the guidance office at WHS or Mr. Tom Murphy, WHS Assistant Principal.

Q. When would the school day begin and end?

A. The day would begin at 7:52 a.m. and end at 2:30 p.m.

Q. Would the later start time impact the busses at the other schools in the district?

A. No.  The high school does not use the same busses as the other schools in the district.

Q. What time would I be able to drop my children off at school?

A. Teachers would be on duty at 7:34 a.m. each morning.

Q. How will the change impact athletics at Windham High School?

A. Currently, some athletic teams are dismissed before the end of the day to accommodate for long bus rides.  The athletic and guidance department will work cooperatively to minimize any disruption to our student's school day.  The two programs that were dismissed most often were alpine skiing and golf.

Q. How will the change impact WHS students' ability to enroll in the CTE program at Salem High School?

A. The CTE courses at Salem HS for the 2010-2011 will occur during blocks 1 and 4, which accommodated all but one WHS student that enrolled in the program.  Windham High School students that are enrolled in a Block 1 course at CTE would not miss any class time at WHS.  Guidance would work to alleviate any issues that students enrolled in Block 4 classes would encounter.

Q. What schools offer CTE programs for Windham High School students?

A. Salem High School is our primary CTE center.  Our students may attend Pinkerton Academy for non-duplicated courses, e.g. HVAC.

Q. How will students be transported to Salem High School?

A. Students enrolled in a Block 1 course at CTE may be transported to CTE via the Salem High School bus in the morning.  A bus will depart from WHS for students enrolled in Block 4 classes at CTE.

Q. Is there any meeting scheduled to discuss this change among the Region 17 schools?

A. A meeting is scheduled on May 25 at Salem High School for Region 17 members to discuss options to best accommodate students interested in CTE programs.
