Special Events in Grade 6

 Lowell Field Trip

In the spring, all sixth grade students travel to The Boott Cotton Mills National Historical Park in Lowell,    Massachusetts to participate in the "Power to Production" workshop.  Upon arrival, the sixth graders will travel by trolley to the Suffolk Mill where the turbine exhibit is located.  They will trace the manufacturing of cotton cloth from power to production using interactive power train exhibits.

Lowell was founded because of the waterpower harnessed at the Pawtucket Falls.  Students will explore Lowell's historic canal system.  After visiting the canal system, some students will build, and then test water wheels and turbines.

Others will have the opportunity to design and construct their own canal system.  Concluding their visit, students will visit the Boott Cotton Mills Museum to observe one hundred fifty year old power looms still operating today.

International Unit

Our International Unit is a Social Studies unit in which students complete an in depth study of a specific country.  Students will examine a specific country in relation to its history, culture, religion, natural resources and economy.  In order to determine its importance to the world, students will participate in a variety of learning activities, which will center around four essential questions:

 1. How does your country's economy compare to the United States ?
 2. What natural resources do the people  of your country need to conserve and protect for survival ?
 3. How does the physical geography affect the culture and economy of your country ?
 4. How can you communicate the importance of your country to others ?
