Our Commitment to Safety

Our district maintains robust safety and security systems and protocols to support secure buildings and provide a safe school community. We work very closely with our town partners—police and fire—on prevention, preparedness, and response to various scenarios. The district would like to share the essential measures we've put in place across our district to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in our schools, which is always the priority for our district leaders, building administrators, school counseling team, teachers, and staff.

Emergency Response Protocols

The district utilized the “I Love You Guys” school and community safety program. The district operates and trains staff using the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) and Standard Reunification Method (SRM).

  • Standard Response Protocol (SRP): A set of five actions that can be performed during an incident, such as "hold," "secure," "lockdown," and "evacuate."

  • Standard Reunification Method (SRM): Provides information on what to do and plan for after an incident

Visit the “I Love You Guys” foundation website to learn more about this foundation.

Staff and Community Preparedness

Each school runs at least 12 safety drills with its staff and students throughout the school year. Some examples of these drills include bus evacuation, fire, and lockdown. The exercises are tailored to grade levels, and developmentally appropriate language is used when discussing these topics.

Standard Response Protocol

The Standard Response Protocol (SRP) is based on the response to any given situation, not individual scenarios. The SRP is based on the following actions: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter.

Planning and Response Teams

Our district’s Emergency Management Team consists of district-level leaders, building leaders, and representatives from the Windham Police and Fire Departments. This group meets regularly to review and update our safety plans, which include daily safety checks, district-wide radio communications, and facility inspections. Our district is fortunate to have school counselors and a licensed Mental Health Counselor on staff at each building. Our school counseling department understands that it's essential for students to feel connected to their school community and supported by their peers, teachers, and trusted adults. When we create positive connections and support, staff can more effectively address students' needs and concerns when they arise. We encourage families to contact their child’s School Counselor or building-based Mental Health Counselor with questions or concerns.

Communication Channels

Our district uses SchoolMessenger as its primary method of communication with parents and staff. This platform allows us to send messages to parents immediately via phone, text, and email. SchoolMessenger uses data (phone and email addresses) entered into the district’s student information system, PowerSchool, which families are asked to review and update yearly. Parents can update their contact information at any time during the school year. Please contact your child’s school directly to make changes if needed.

Please note you must initially opt-in using your mobile device to receive text notifications. Please download the directions on how to opt-in to receive text notifications.

Facilities Safety

With the support of the Windham School Board and in collaboration with the Windham Fire and Police Departments, all school buildings meet or exceed the minimum safety standards for building use. The district also completes a Homeland Security audit every three years. Based on these recommendations, we continue to make safety and security upgrades to our buildings.

Community Partnerships

We are fortunate to have a close, collaborative working relationship with our School Board, Town, Police, and Fire Departments, which allows us to be united on all aspects of school safety.

We are proud to have Windham Police Department School Resource Officers in our building daily. They provide a positive environment for our students, district, and school leaders by providing live feedback on safety drills and everyday safety operations.

Our Windham Fire and Police Departments also actively participate in emergency management planning and preparations.  They provide our distrit with expert advice and guidance on creating and executing district safety training.
